So, we all know that the times and styles of Soul Society is 'behind the times' with the tech it lacks, right?
So, what happens if we instantly, without reason (like go hunt down hollow X and hollow Y) drop our characters in the current world?

Well, let's find out!

Foggily, Chiken woke up from a sort of trance. Looking around, he didn't notice anyone he knew or see anything familiar, but that wasn't saying much because well... what do you expect? It's Chiken. Anyways, he didn't look very long because his attention was drawn by something else: some sort of large glowing wall up on a building. And there were more too, lots of glowing walls and large buildings. Not to mention all of the noise, the sounds of loud machines roaring by and making noises. Chiken was transfixed by all of the sights, and the constant stream of people that were looking at him funnily as they walked by were interesting too.
Chiken mostly stared at the large glowing walls. Even with their shifting colors, they gradually lost his attention. Rather, his attention was grabbed by the weird machine things that, on second glance, were carrying people inside. Mystified, Chiken started walking towards the first one he saw. He stepped off the gray walkway and stepped down onto a darker one, hearing the loud noises from the cars even more and Chiken decided he liked it. As he was crossing to the other machine, he was promptly hit by a bus and sent flying.

BUS dealt 5 WOUNDS to CHIKEN

After picking himself up from the wall he was sent flying into, Chiken looked quizzically at the machines, wondering why they tackled him. Nonplussed Chiken dusted himself off and continued walking down the street.

"Chiken!" yelled Anshou, seeing him get hit by a bus. He raced across the street and flipped over his body. He wasn't breathing and his eyes were closed tight. "Shit!" Anshou tore a piece of his shirt off and wrapped it around Chiken's bleeding head, not noticing at the attention that the young ladies on the street were giving him now that half his shirt was off.

"Chiken! Come on! Open your eyes!" He lifted Chiken's head into his lap, which really started getting women's attention. It didn't help that Anshou was the sort of pretty boy that made girls heads turn anyway.

But Chiken still wasn't breathing. Anshou swallowed hard. "Guess... I have... no choice." He looked down at Chiken's unconscious face. "I'll have to... give him mouth to mouth!"

This brought a few blushes and squeals from the girls now crowded in a circle around Anshou and Chiken. Anshou closed his eyes, pinched Chiken's nose shut, and opened his mouth. Slowly, he leaned his head down. One spectating girl broke out in a terrible nosebleed.

"What are you doing?" said Chiken.

"Shh, Chiken, I'm saving your life." He took a deep breath, then stopped and let it out slowly. Anshou looked up to see Chiken floating in midair, back in his Shinigami uniform in full spirit form. He looked back and forth from the floating Chiken to the dead one in front of him.

"Hey! Who's that?" said Chiken, peering down at his own faux body. "He looks kind of like that guy I saw in a mirror once."

"Did... that bus knock you out of your faux body?" Anshou asked.

But Chiken didn't answer, and the girls around them didn't seem to notice that Anshou was now talking to air. Most of them had whipped out their camera phones and were now snapping pictures of the two young men. "Come on, Chiken, get back in your body so we can get out of here. This crowd's... a little scary."

"Ow, my head..."

Hmm, this is weird. This is very weird. Where am I?

Looking around, Junshirou deduced several things... the first was that he had landed in a skip. The second was that this skip was in some sort of back alley. He decided it would be good to find his bearings and then try and figure out what had happened.

...okay, this was strange. This was very, very strange... he supposed it must be the human world. But even so... this was just downright weird. The streets were being travelled by ... some sort of large metal animals? On closer inspection, it looked like they were rolling along... kind of like a carriage being pulled by an invisible horse who could move like a speeding arrow. He wandered out of the alley a little.

"Hey, watch it!", cried a passer-by, bumping into him. Junshirou quickly retreated into the alley. There were too many people here; it would be impossible to scope everything out properly. He looked up at the nearest building.

And up.

And up.

"...takai..."

Okay, he was out of his depth here. He gazed around in confusion for the next five minutes or so, trying to take in all the new sights and sounds, feeling utterly overwhelmed by it all.

...hey, there was a crowd over there... he wondered what they were gathering around. He stared to try and get a better view.

...was that Anshou? And that looked like Chiken... he ventured in closer. So it hadn't just been him who had found himself here. Chiken looked torn up pretty badly, though... he wondered what had happened. There didn't seem to be any Hollows around...

He crossed the street, taking care to avoid any of the metal carriages, and tried to make his way through the crowd. Five minutes later, after elbowing a few people out of the way in exasperation, he finally managed to.

"Anshou, Chiken? What's going on here?"

Chiken looked down at Anshou, Tenkawa, and the mirror guy, puzzled. Anshou told him to get back into his body but... wasn't he already? Chiken looked at himself, he felt a little different after being hit, and he was flying now, but he thought he was in his own body.
However, the mirror person Chiken saw really got his attention. He never saw him like that, he always only saw him in really shiny things, and Chiken could never interact with him because he perfectly matched Chiken's actions. However, this was different than before, and Chiken floated over to him, mystified. He reached out to touch him, when suddenly he felt himself being sucked right into him. Excited for whatever was happening now, Chiken didn't resist it.

Chiken opened his eyes again, this time he was in Anshou's lap. Confused, Chiken blinked. "Oh, hello Anshou. My head hurts." Chiken stated matter-of-factly, then gave him a smile. Without any problems, he stood up and looked around at all the people, some were pointing weird brick-like things at them, which only confused Chiken more. However, he was finding it a little hard to concentrate with the weird pain he was feeling. Without a second thought, Chiken started speaking, "Way of Binding 10: Restore!"

After the flash of reiatu, the crowd gasped, seeing Chiken totally fixed up as if the bus hadn't even hit him.
CHIKEN has healed 5 WOUNDS
Ignoring the crowd, Chiken turned to Anshou and Tenkawa. "That's much better." He smiled at them, not really noticing what he just did in front of an entire crowd of normal people.

Matsuura watched the chain of events from the cafe across the street. He sipped a latte calmly, his cigarette burning itself to ash in the ashtray on his table.

By the looks of things this was the first time any of them had been here, slightly amusing really.

"Your bill sir." The waitress walked by his table, dropping a slip of paper onto it before resuming on with her day.

"Er.." Matsuura flipped it over to look at the total. "2000 yen for a latte?!" He managed a spit take at the price before looking around cautiously. "Maybe if I...just left, no one would notice..."

He slid out of his chair and started to slink away slowly, as the disaster across the street that Chiken caused distracted everyone.

"Hold it right there mister."

Matsuura froze, turning slowly to look at the now very angry waitress.

"Trying to skip out on your bill are you? We have a special place for people like you!." She grabbed him by the ear and dragged him inside the cafe, passed the people who were all too busy at Chikens light display to notice and into the kitchen, throwing him mountain of a pile of dirty dishes.

"You can work off your debt then. 2000 yen should amount to...oh...3 hours or so. Have fun."

Matsuura pulled himself to his feet, looking up at his daunting task before shouting at the fleeing waitress. "Don't you people ever do your own dishes?! This is unsanitary! You can't make me do-"

CRACK!

The dish smashed into Matsuura's face, sending him toppling over into the pile of dishes, smashing several more.

"Uh oh...you broke some dishes that'll cost you, oh...another 3 hours or so." The waitress chirped happily before leaving the kitchen again.

Matsuura slowly pulled himself up, grumbling angrily as he started to scrub and clean the dishes.

"Stupid cafe... stupid latte....stupid waitress...who does she think she is?.... I aughta.... Never coming here again....See how they like losing a valued customer.... I'll tell all of soul society to boycott this place...."

The crowd of people around the shinigami started muttering. Junshirou's jaw dropped. Chiken smiled obliviously and started walking away. A lot more people seemed to be pointing strange brick-devices at him. Junshirou stood still for five seconds or so, then ran over to Chiken.

"Um... Chiken, you just... can you remember what the first rule of interacting with humans was? You remember, in SL&P class?"

Chiken thought for a while, before answering very, very loudly:

"It was that we weren't supposed to let any humans know about the existence of shinigami, right?"

The muttering from the crowd grew louder. "Shinigami?" "What's this guy on, and where can I get some?" "...what's happening? He just glowed for a second... what was that?" Junshirou winced.

"And what did you just do?"

"Um... I let humans know about the existence of shinigami?"

"And what did sensei say we have to do if we let humans know about the existence of shinigami?"

"Um... erm... you know, I can't remember."

"Well, the first thing we do is to run." Junshirou grabbed Chiken's arm and started running. Some of the crowd started to give chase. He'd lost sight of Anshou, but he decided that it was a problem that could wait until later. Right now he had to get out of here and preferably bring Chiken with him, so he didn't get into any more trouble. (A "Yay, this is just like playing tag!" made him think he was thinking along the right lines.) After a while, the two shinigami managed to outrun the crowd, and Junshirou pulled Chiken into a conveniently-located back alley. He spoke through gasps for breath.

"Okay, we'll hide out in here for a little while, and then we'll think of what to do. You can look at the metal carriage things while we're waiting."

"Can I-" "No, you cannot touch them."

This was bad, he decided. They were stranded in the human world, with no idea what was happening, and at this rate Chiken was going to get himself killed. He started to lose himself in his thoughts, then snapped back to reality several minutes later. He hadn't noticed Chiken wander off in the meantime.

Ryouichi awoke disoriented and groggy. With some considerable effort, his consciousness clawed itself out of the gray fog enveloping his mind. Suddenly, everything snapped into focus, and he started violently with a quiet hiss of breath.

Where... am I? His eyes darted about, taking in the surroundings. He was currently sitting slumped against a building in the mouth of an alley in a large city somewhere. Ryouichi was certainly aware that the world had changed more than a little in over a century, but it was still incredible to see the enormous leaps society had taken in the time he had been away, and he felt a bizarre sort of pride swell in his chest. Human ingenuity was a truly fantastic thing.

Interestingly, it seemed he was still wearing his Shinigami robe, although judging from the weird looks people walking past on the street were shooting in his direction, he was definitely in a faux body of some sort. Thankfully, he had apparently worn some more normal-looking clothes underneath his standard-issue garb. It wasn't much, just a business shirt, khaki pants, and dark brown dress shoes, but a Real World school uniform was certainly better than what he was wearing at the moment. And besides, if he had to guess, the Class Rep. would say he looked pretty damn good in that outfit.

After quickly shedding his robe, Ryouichi stood and leaned with practiced nonchalance against the cool brick of the alley wall. Holding his hand up to his face for a moment, he flexed it, and then smiled in satisfaction. This faux body is well-made, at least. Then his thoughts turned to the truly annoying question that had been bugging him ever since he had woken up. What am I doing here? No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't piece together how he had gotten there, and his memories and sense of time were fuzzy. Mugenji, he queried, how did I get here? I'm afraid I have no more idea than you, Ryouichi. I see..., Ryouichi trailed off, still trying to puzzle out just what had happened.

After a few moments of pondering, he blinked, and the solution hit him like a ton of bricks. Could this be... another simulation? He paused, absorbing the ramifications of that possibility. Then... what should I do? If this really was a simulation, doing anything out of the ordinary would defeat the purpose anyway. Ryouichi nodded to himself, coming to a conclusion. He would simply act as if this was completely real. Even if it wasn't, it wouldn't make any difference.

Suddenly, a cry came from the street. Ryouichi whipped his head around, watching in shock as the chaos created by the antics of his semi-insane roommate unfolded. There were a few moments when he began to think that perhaps he should intervene, but he had a feeling that taking any action would probably do more harm than good. With fascination, he noted that many of the people in the crowd that had formed seemed to be taking pictures with miniature cameras that seemed to double as communication devices, and smirked. It would probably be the source of headaches for people higher up in the food chain, but that was none of his concern.

And so, amused, he watched as Tenkawa hurriedly dragged Chiken away from the scene. He was rather glad they hadn't fled toward him. There was no way he wanted to get involved in that madness.

Unfortunately, the commotion in the street seemed to be covering up a far more disturbing sound: The very obviously feminine shrieks coming from around the corner of the alley. Lips pressed into a thin line, he quickly slipped down the dingy corridor and peered covertly around the edge of the brick wall.

There were four men, one of whom was gripping what looked like an automatic rifle, Ryouichi noted, and they had a voluptuous young woman pinned up against the alley wall. The girl was clearly panicked and was sobbing, but the gun pointed toward her head obviously prevented her from resisting. At this point, Ryouichi decided he had seen enough, and, hands in his pockets, he stepped out of his hiding place and into the middle of the alley.

"Just what do you think you're doing?"

The thugs jumped, whirling around to face this newcomer. The girl's eyes told Ryouichi she was torn. Silently, she plead for him to run, but at the same time there was a spark of hope there. "That's no business of yours, kid," the one with the gun sneered. From the way he held himself, he was clearly the leader. "Just move along."

"Oh, I think it is my business." Ryouichi countered blandly, raising an eyebrow. "How about you let the girl go? I guarantee I'll make it worth your while."

"Ha! 'Worth my while'?" the leader snorted, "Listen, you punk, I'm the biggest dealer this side of the city!" His eyes narrowed dangerously. "I don't have any need for your money. Now get out of here. Now." he spat, moving the barrel of his gun away from the woman to point at the boy.

"No, no, you misunderstand me," Ryouichi chuckled, completely unaffected, and perhaps amused, by the threat. Then his tone lost all humor, "I was saying you'd get to keep your lives." He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. It was a smile that promised a quick and painful death.

One of thugs was very clearly freaked out. "H-h-hey boss," he said, pointing shakily at Ryouichi's face, "H-h-his eyes are kinda re-," he caught himself, "I-I mean, m-maybe we should do what he says..."

"Shut up, you imbecile!" the drug lord snapped. Then he turned back to the boy and smirked, "I don't tolerate threats like that, boy. You seem to be forgetting that I'm the one with the gun here! How'd you like me to put a hole in your head, huh?"

"I'd like to see you try." Ryouichi shrugged, smiling wider. The trapped woman was silently mouthing something to him, her eyes still pleading, Run! Please, run! Why? Why won't you run?! "Fine!" the leader snarled, depressing the trigger. Letting out another sob, the captive woman turned her head away and shut her eyes.

The crack of a gunshot echoed through the alley.

Ryouichi Kanue was pretty good at Kidou. However, he had never really liked the fluorescent colors that came with spells. They were far too distracting. So, as he casually raised one of his hands and mentally invoked Force Shield, there was no glowing dome to appear around him. Instead, it was simply as if an invisible wall had formed between him and the bullet, a wall which the aforementioned bullet was now embedded in.

The young woman, after she realized there was no characteristic splat coming after the gunshot, turned her head cautiously back around. When she saw the bullet simply hanging in the air, she felt her jaw fall slack. The two lesser thugs were wearing similar expressions, but as the shock wore off, the leader gritted his teeth and began firing again and again, each shot as ineffective as the first. "Damnit!" he roared, "What the hell are you?!"

Ryouichi took the opportunity to step over to the man holding the girl and cast Disrupt on him. As he collapsed, his captive stumbled away, wincing as she fell backwards to land on her elbows. A quick glance told the boy she was mostly unharmed, physically anyway. Her eyes, though, were still swirling with the same conflicting emotions. She was hopeful but afraid, although the young Shinigami was no longer sure if that fear was for him or of him.

"Hold it, freak!" a voice suddenly demanded, accompanied by a sharp gasp. Ryouichi, in the process of casting another kidou spell on the second thug, rapidly whipped his head back to look at the gang's leader. Grinning, he was now pointing his weapon back at the girl, and the implication was clear: Stop now or she dies.

Ryouichi paled considerably. Shit. Shitshitshitshitshit. It had been stupid of him not to go for the one with the gun first. "Alright, you win." "And none of your weird tricks!" Ryouichi nodded. "No tricks." Slowly, he raised his hands and put them behind his head, the gang's eyes following his every movement. Grunting, the drug lord motioned to the thug Ryouichi had just been fighting, who smirked and grabbed the boy's wrists tightly before forcing him down onto his knees.

Satisfied that he wasn't going to resist, the leader grinned even wider and moved the barrel of his gun from the girl to Ryouichi again, who was now staring up at him hatefully. "You see? This is why I'm the largest dealer for miles around. You thought you could stop me at first, but now you've learned. They all learn. Nobody can stop me, the Great-"

Ryouichi had heard enough. A bit of concentration and with another wordless Way of Destruction 11: Disrupt had the man above him tumbling away, his soul thrown from his body. "Wha-!" The lead thug was already quickly turning his gun back to his hostage, but Ryouichi was faster. An equally silent Way of Destruction 1: Thrust shattered his gun and sent him flying into the far wall, a sharp crack resulting from his skull impacting with the bricks.

The remaining thug, the mousy one who had been urging his boss to run, began to hyperventilate. "P-p-please don't hurt me!" he stuttered, getting down on his knees and bowing to Ryouichi as if he were some kind of vengeful god, "I'll get out of crime! I won't do anything like this again! Just please-"

Ryouichi's eyes flickered to the woman, who was staring at him with wide eyes, and then back to the thug groveling on the ground in front of him. He would have liked to teach the coward a lesson, but... She doesn't need to see this, he decided. Sighing, he nodded at the man, "Alright. I'm feeling merciful today. Go on, get out of here." When the thug made no move to leave, Ryouichi pulled him up by the back of his shirt and shoved him toward the alley entrance. "Go," he snapped, eyes hard.

As the scrawny thug squeaked and scampered away, Ryouichi crouched and turned back to the young woman. "Are you alright, Miss?" he asked, smiling kindly and extending a hand. "I-I," she started shakily, pausing a moment, before breaking down. "I was j-just passing t-through here," she sobbed tearfully, "A shor-shortcut, you know? But they were going to- t-they were g-going to-!" The girl was unable to finish, the shock overwhelming her, and she began crying again.

Ryouichi may have enjoyed playing with people's minds, but if there were some things he couldn't stand to do, one of which was leaving an innocent girl to cry. "Hey now," he said softly, laying a comforting hand on her shoulder, "They're gone. You don't have to worry about them anymore, okay? You're safe." Sniffling, she looked up at him, "Really?" Ryouichi smiled warmly, "Aa, it's alright." For a moment she looked like she was going to be okay, but before he realized it she had grabbed a hold of him and was bawling and hiccuping into his shirt. Ryouichi, really having no idea what to do in this situation, simply wrapped his arms around her and let her cry.

After a few minutes, her tears died down and the last of her hiccups subsided, and they stood. "T-thank you," she stammered, face flushed "Oh, you're welcome!" the Shinigami beamed, "It was no trouble." Suddenly, she noticed the rather large tear-stain on his shirt. "Eep!" she squeaked, hands over her mouth, "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry, your shirt, I-" Ryouichi blinked, glancing down, "Oh this?" he shrugged, smiling, "It's fine, don't worry about it. I've got others, anyway." The girl just nodded, staring silently at him with an increasingly obvious blush on her face.

After a little while, Ryouichi decided her staring was starting to get a little awkward. "Shouldn't we, er, call the police?" he observed, gesturing to the unconscious thugs strewn about the alley. "Oh!" she exclaimed, snapping out of her daze, "Of course!" In a few moments she had her cell phone out and was calling the emergency line. Ryouichi tuned out most of her words as he tried to figure out what he should do. Staying to wait for the police would be a bad idea. "Yes, could you please connect me to the city police department? ...Thank you. ...I'm in an alley off of... Okay, thank you." She hung up, turning to face Ryouichi again.

But Ryouichi was already turning the corner to go back to the entrance of the alley. "Wait!" she shouted, running after him, "You're leaving? I haven't even gotten your name!" The boy blinked, turning back to her apologetically, "It's Kanue. Kanue Ryouichi." He paused for a moment, trying to best work out how to explain things, "The police will be here in a few minutes. They'll ask questions about that," he pointed to the men on the ground, "questions that I won't be able to answer." The woman bit her lip. Clearly she was trying to think of reasons he should stay. "I'm sorry," he said, and he meant it. Ryouichi didn't relish the fact that he was going to be leaving the poor, scared, near-rape victim alone to wait for the police. But there was nothing for it. Secrecy was paramount.

As he was turning to go, she surprised him by speaking up again, "Ono Kunika." Ryouichi gave the most intelligent response he could think of. "Huh?" The girl laughed, "My name." "Oh." "Well, Ryouichi-san," Kunika began, getting over her giggles quickly, "If you're just going to walk away, then how about this?" She picked up her bag, which had been discarded, unnoticed against the wall all this time, and fished through it, finally pulling out a pen and notepad with a triumphant cry. "Aaaand, here we go," she exclaimed, scribbling some information down and tearing the page off to hand to him, "My name, number, and address." She regarded him with a serious look, "I owe you one. If you ever need anything, let me know, okay?"

Ryouichi nodded solemnly, folding the paper and pocketing it. "I will," he promised, "Take care of yourself, Kunika-san." And then he was gone, returning to the street and melting into the crowd. Kunika watched him go, and averted her eyes only when she had completely lost sight of him. "Sayonara," she whispered.
