Although often eclipsed by the power of Zanpakutou, Kidou (or "Demon Art") presents a powerful and versatile addition to any Shinigami's arsenal. Kidou is the technique that Shinigami use to focus their reiatsu into various magic spells. These spells serve a wide variety of uses such as healing, defense, or combat.

There are three types of Kidou:

WAY OF BINDING - Spells for healing and defense
WAY OF DESTRUCTION - Spells for attack
FORBIDDEN SPELLS - The most powerful spells, forbidden to use in Soul Society

Spells are written as such:

Ranged Kidou Attack + Special KL*(4)d8. Air-elemental. Affects all opponents. Deals double damage to targets with FLYING.
The number at the beginning of the spell's description is the SPELL LEVEL. You must be at least that level or higher to learn that Kidou spell, and spells cost 1 LP to learn. Once learned, a spell can be used at anytime, but each time you cast a Kidou spell, you lose an amount of HP equal to that spell's level. If you do not have enough HP, the spell does not fail, but you are reduced to 0 HP after it takes effect.

KL stands for Kidou Level, and this part of the spell text is written similar to an ABILITY or SPECIAL ATTACK. In the case of Orchid Sky, if your KL is 1, you roll 1d8. If your KL is 3, you roll 3d8. The number in parentheses is the maximum number, so if your KL is 7, you still only roll the maximum of 4d8.

Kidou damage is calculated as such:

MIND + MIND roll + Highest-rolled ATT die (Effective Kidou ATT) vs. MIND + MIND roll + DODGE bonus + Highest-rolled DEF die (Effective Kidou DEF)

RANGED KIDOU ATTACK - A RANGED ATTACK with Kidou. If you DEFEND during the turn before you use a RANGED ATTACK, no non-RANGED attacks affect you during the turn you use it.

TOUCH KIDOU ATTACK - Bypasses a character's defenses. Character's MIND roll and DEF dice do not apply when calculating Effective Kidou DEF against a Touch Kidou Attack.
